Provide the total community with comprehensive injury prevention programs to increase civic awareness and create public acceptance.


Coalition Representation Background: (Please describe the membership of your coalition)

The coalition is part of the 22 Regional Advisory Councils. A partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation was developed about six years ago. Funding has been provided by TXDOT for injury prevention programs. Members of the coalition include: law enforcement (Sheriff’s office and public safety officers) hospital representatives, EMS, boy scouts and employers. Quarterly coalition meetings are held.

Public Information and Education and Other Program Activities:

  • High school presentations are conducted on TNTT, drinking/driving and the use of fatal vision goggles for pre-prom activities and driver’s education classes.
  • Wake Village Elementary & Bloomburg Elementary, TROO on Bicycle-playground, home safety, staying friends and playing it safe, – targets elementary school children bicycle safety, gun safety, ATV safety for grades 4 through 6.
  • Child passenger safety/seat belt education programs are conducted at safety fairs, local WalMart, Toys r US and childbirth classes.
  • Wild About Wellness Health Expo and Child Care Conference presentation includes a 9 county area.

Program Outcome Measurements: (Coalition Successes - Describe successful traffic safety programming and activities which can include anecdotal statements.)

  • Presented over 100 educational programs to over 2,000 students (6300).
  • Coordinate "Trauma Nurses Talk Tough" programs in schools (# of students reached 3390)
  • Plans are underway to establish partnerships with employers to sustain the coalition activities
  • Conduct car safety seat checks (3-4 child safety seat checkpoint yearly)

Evaluation Tool: (Describe the evaluation tool(s) used to measure change. (i.e. survey design, pre/post community traffic measurements, observational surveys, tests, questionnaires, focus group, user interface rating tool or evaluation report)

In some cases pre and post surveys are used for the Trauma Nurses Talk Tough programs.
