Goal
The goal of the toolkit is to help Safe Community Coalition members
and older driver advocates assess how friendly their community’s roadways
are toward older drivers. Are the roadways and intersections designed
and engineered to be safe and easy to navigate? The toolkit will consist
of a series of elements that advocates or laypersons can use to:
- Understand the key roadway engineering elements
that contribute to friendliness
- Assess roadway friendliness, and the extent of
older driver injury challenges in their community
- Identify resources for probing the older driver issue more
thoroughly
Background
The focus of the Older Driver Toolkit is on
helping older drivers navigate more safely in
their communities. Older drivers often face challenges in their cognitive and motor
skills that makes it difficult for them to navigate communities easily.
They are also more prone to visual impairments that further test their driving
skills.
We have assembled several resources that advocates can use to inform
community leaders and traffic engineers about the need for older driver
navigational aides on their roadways. Here is the list of resources
contained in this toolkit:
Older Driver PowerPoint Presentation
The purpose of the PowerPoint
presentation is to introduce the scope of the older driver challenge to
communities, and to provide a brief overview of strategies for helping a
community become friendlier to older drivers. This presentation is
intended for Safe Community Coalition members, traffic safety engineers
and others interested in older driver issues. Click here to view the

Roadway Friendliness
Assessment Tool
The purpose of the Roadway Friendliness Assessment Tool is
to help Safe Community Coalition members and other advocates to determine
how friendly their community’s roadways are to older drivers. Click here
